I Hate the Fact That It’s True… I Love My Pies and Cookies Too!

January 10, 2011

In 1880, the first year they kept a record, one in thirty people got cancer. Today it’s one out of two.

There may be many factors contributing to this increase, but I cannot help but notice the difference in dietary intake between the late 1800’s and now, and how this information sheds light upon contributing factors affecting chronic illness.

A century ago, the average person ate food produced on a farm, with no fast food available and very little processed or “snacking” food to purchase. Today in America, these foods make up a majority of many peoples’ diets. In addition, farm foods were produced then without the abundance of chemicals used today.

Another interesting factor is that, in last 20 years, we have increased sugar consumption in the U.S. from 26 pounds to 135 lbs. of sugar per person per year! Prior to the 1900’s, the average consumption was only 5 lbs. per person per year. Common sense tells me that human bodies were not created to run optimally on this kind of fuel.

Learning these kinds of facts helped to propel me to take drastic action regarding my diet, and to eat foods like those from the garden we were originally placed in as human beings. I hope this motivates you in the same way!

Question: What next step can you take to begin making changes, such as reading an appropriate book, checking out a website, visiting a nutritionist, or joining a support group?

“Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.’” Genesis 1:29
